English Ceilidh and Barn Dance with an infectious sense of fun
Music that makes you want to dance with a driving rhythm and accurate
phrasing
Talented, experienced musicians with a wide variety of instruments
What is English Ceilidh?
Well, first of all, it's pronounced Kay - Lee (stress the Kay) and no,
it isn't
Irish or Scottish dancing, although we may well play and call
some Irish and
Scottish dances!
English Ceilidh and English Barn Dance mean
more or less the same thing (to
you and me, anyway). The style of
dancing, whether fast and furious (more
ceilidh style) or a little bit
gentler (more barn dance style) will be judged by
our very experienced
caller. You can tell us in advance if you know you want
livelier or
more genteel.
What sort of dances can you expect? Well...
Playford Dances
e.g. Childgrove An elegant, fairly simple dance with a simply gorgeous tune
We play lots of Playford tunes and our caller picks appropriate dances
Typical barn dances e.g. Gay Gordons dah dah de dah dah dah dah - you know the one!
Bridge of Athlone, Waves of Tory etc.
Fun Dances e.g. Horse's Bransle (pronounced
brawl)
If the crowd isn't very experienced then simple dances like this can
be great
fun and get everyone up on their feet and enjoying
themselves.
Leave it to our caller who will
judge the standard and pick suitable dances accordingly.
What setup does the band need?
A minimum of 3 metres by 5 metres of stage space
We don't need to be on an actual stage, although that would be ideal but we
do
need enough room for ourselves, all our instruments and our PA kit.
1 x 13amp socket
What about safety?
All our electrical equipment is PAT tested and
we have a valid certificate
We carry public liability insurance of up to
£5,000,000 via our affiliation to the
English Folk Dance and Song
Society. This covers events with up to 200 guests.
For larger
events we are able to insure with specialist musicians' insurers.
